The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the Hawaii Real Estate Commission.

However, we recommend you contact the Real Estate Commission for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred. Also, there are some alternative paths for education and/or experience if the candidate meets certain requirements. It is recommended to review the flow chart available on the Commission's website.

Pre License

Salesperson

• Must be 18 years of age
• Must provide proof of US Citizenship
• Possess a reputation for honesty, truthfulness, financial integrity, and fair dealing
• Complete a Commission approved 60 hour prelicense course (Completion Certificates are valid for 2 years)
• Pass an examination administered by the Commission
• Within 2 years of passing the state exam, submit a complete salesperson license application

Broker

• Must be 18 years of age
• Possess a reputation for honesty, truthfulness, financial integrity, and fair dealing
• Hold a current Salesperson license
• Have at least three years experience as a Real Estate Salesperson in the past 5 years of being licensed
• Complete a Commission approved 80 hour prelicense course (Completion Certificates are valid for 2 years)
• Pass an examination administered by the Commission
• Within 2 years of passing the state exam, submit a complete broker license application

Continuing Education

• Licenses expire on December 31st of even number years
• Licensees must renew their licenses by November 30 of even number years
• While online licensing renewals will be available until 11:59:59 PM, December 31, the November 30 deadline ensures that licensees who submit complete renewal applications by the filing deadline will be successfully renewed prior to the license expiration date and will receive their license pocket card before the start of the new licensing biennium.
• Must complete a total of 20 hours of continuing education each renewal cycle
• Must complete a commission mandated 5 hour core course education (two courses 2.5 hours each)
• Must complete 15 hours of elective courses

Hawaii does not reciprocate with any other state.
